Hi, I'm J. Alexander Greenwood — but you can call me Alex.
I'm the author of the award-nominated John Pilate Mystery Series, a longtime podcaster, and a speaker who’s spent decades helping people tell better stories — whether through fiction, podcasts, or public relations.
If you like smart, fast-moving mysteries with a bit of snark, you'll find a lot to enjoy in my books: Pilate’s Cross, Pilate’s Key, Pilate’s Ghost, Pilate’s Blood, Pilate’s 7, Pilate’s Rose, and the novella Pilate’s Shadow. The latest, Pilate’s Faith, hit shelves in Fall 2021 — and according to Kirkus Reviews, I pull "many tricks from my writer's satchel" to keep readers guessing.
Beyond mysteries, I’ve dabbled in horror (The Sign, A Debt of Flame on Kindle Vella), co-written a historic action novel (Big Cabin and Dispatches from the West), and published nonfiction bestsellers (The Podcast Option and Kickstarter Success Secrets).
Along the way, my short story Obsidian has picked up some nice recognition, including nods from the Launch Pad Prose Competition, Horror2Comic, and HorrOrigins Film Festival. I was also named Best Local Author by Kansas City Magazine’s 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards — which, honestly, still feels pretty great and maybe a bit strange.
When I'm not writing books, I’m behind the mic. I host Mysterious Goings On, a show for writers and curious minds, and PR After Hours, a podcast for business and PR pros. I also co-host Going to Killing City, a true crime show fueled by good cocktails and better stories.
In 2021, I got the chance to collaborate with veteran producer Michael Pellico on a film treatment and screenplay (Saharan Ice), which scratched a longtime Hollywood itch.
Today, I also speak internationally on topics like indie publishing, podcasting, marketing communications, and building creative careers. After fourteen years running my own Kansas City PR agency, I moved into a leadership role at a major university — where I still get to spend my days telling stories (and helping others tell theirs).
I write regularly on my Substack, All the Fits That's News, covering culture, media, and whatever else keeps me up at night.
I grew up in Oklahoma, but Kansas City is home now — where I live with my family, a pile of books, and more half-finished ideas than I'd care to admit.
